Chrome Inner Engine Cover

This is one of the best things you can do for the left side of your engine. The part is Fire & Steel Chrome Inner Engine Cover #K53020-196A. You may need to do some Internet searching as this part is getting harder to find. The installation is about as easy as it gets.

What you'll need:

  • 1- Fire & Steel Chrome Inner Engine Cover Part Number K53020-196A ($110-$120)
  • 1- 5mm Allen Wrench for removing existing side cover
  • 1- 10mm Standard socket for separating stock parts and shift pedals
  • 1- Split Ring Pliers or a couple of screwdrivers to remove floorboards.

Here's How:

We'll assume you've received your cover, have taken it out of the box and whistled softly over this big chrome beauty. If you have a MC jack this will be a little easier on your knees but it certainly isn't necessary.

  1. Move the left floorboard out of the way. Here's the simplest way I've found. Below the floorboard are two bolts that hold the floorboard bracket to the frame. One of those bolts also holds the engine protector bar in place on a Nomad. Loosen that front bolt, remove the rear bolt and swivel the floorboard down out of the way. If you wish you can remove both bolts so the floorboard is completely out of your way but replacing the front bolt on Nomads can be difficult if the engine bar isn't lined up perfectly with the bolt hole.
  2. Remove the 10mm bolts holding the shift pedals in place and slide the pedals from the shaft.
  3. Remove all the 5mm Allen head bolts holding the side cover on and, carefully, remove the side cover which will come off along with the black inner cover.
  4. You might want to put a towel in your lap or on the workbench for this step just to avoid scratching anything. Remove the series of 10mm bolts holding the outer (chrome) and inner (black) covers together. Keep track where each bolt comes from, there are a couple of different lengths. Once removed you might have to pop the two apart with a rubber mallet or the palm of your hand. There are a couple of guide pins that could get a little stubborn.
  5. Grab that beautiful new inner cover and mate it with your original outer cover. Put the bolts back in.
  6. Re-assemble everything in the reverse order you took them off. Get the finger prints off your new part and go ride!
